ABOUT

Tech-Innovation Development Programme

The key ingredients to advance and leapfrog Information Technology (IT) development in any country are research and innovations.  As the foremost IT body, Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) continued to show commitment to the research and innovation development in Nigeria. Recently, NCS has shown renewed commitment to the development of rigorous and smart innovative ideas for the economic empowerment of the nation

TIDP 01 Innovative Solutions

Over 64 million Nigerians do not have bank accounts out of population of over 200 million.  Financial inclusion precedes economic prosperity in most countries across the world. However, Nigeria has been left behind on this front, and that, without financial inclusion and financial literacy. Since these vast majority do not have bank accounts, they rely on cash and unreliable intermediaries for their transactions. They do not often learn financial prudence by dealing with these intermediaries and agents. Some lose their life savings by keeping cash at home, under beds or human agents. These agents try as much as possible to keep the unbanked from having contact with formal financial institutions or acquiring knowledge of working solutions to improve their financial well-being.  Financial records are necessary to transition into formal circle of business activities. Unbanked and underserved business people do not have quality means of attaining good financial records without resulting to unkept manual records.

Cashfog trajectory was at first into peer-to-peer rentals. It was however discovered that most of the clients were not paying properly for the services, due to lack of formal payment method or accessible intermediaries, in worst case scenarios. The idea for Cashfog was birthed in participation of hackathon hosted by Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access (EFInA) and Financial Service Innovation (FSI). The idea was to build a parametric insurance platform for unbanked but we still have the unbanked that are not on boarded. We decided to follow it up with the Cashfog payment wallet. The wallet enables seamless payment and transactions even without the need for identity documents.

Cashfog has piloted test cases with Minimum Viable Product with initial 5000 customers and it is hoped that the service will full grow to cover about 35% of the unbanked in next few years. We plan to use Quick Response code, simple payment hardware and Near Field Communication to boost how users make payment and acquire financial literacy in the long run.

Value proposition: Gaschek is a necessary system in any place where cylinders are used either for industrial or domesticated purposes.

Problem statement: An increase in the cases of fire outbreaks and the lack of a monitoring system to track gas usage calls for the need of a system that can perform gas leakage or smoke detection and gas usage monitoring with a hybrid alarm. Hence, the need for Gaschek.

Methodology: Our solution is an Internet of Things (IoT) based device designed and built to monitor the usage of gas in gas cylinders. The device is also equipped with gas leakage detector as well as smoke detector to alert the user via a warning alarm and an indicator, text message as well as phone call when gas leakage or smoke is detected. Also, the system comes with a mobile application that could be used to monitor the gas level (in percentage and mass) in real-time from anywhere in the world. In addition, the mobile application could be used to order for gas refill when the gas level reaches a particular threshold.

Business value: The product has a large market base as there are about 3 billion people who actively use cooking as their source of energy either industrially or domestically globally. Hence, the viable market space for the marketing, sales, and distribution of Gaschek.

Features:

  1. Gas level detection
  2. Gas leakage detection
  3. Smoke detection
  4. Audible alarm alert
  5. Visible warning indicator
  6. Call notification
  7. Text message notification
  8. Mobile application for monitoring gas level, system control, booking or purchase of cooking gas, locating and contacting cooking gas dealers.
  9. Runs on rechargeable batteries and charges via solar panel, wall charger, and AC power supply

The problems presented by the traditional contributory financial system is ably addressed by the proposal of THRIVELY, which is a robust social and economic empowerment system. THRIVELY is a digital contributory platform, i.e., fund pool, that allows individuals of similar interest to combine their money for certain use-cases and causes. The system allows organizations, associations, and social groups to create private group accounts, with each member having access to the account balance. The suggested approach, however, would be built on blockchain technology and machine learning in order to add transparency and intelligent predictive capabilities into the system. Individuals with shared interest are compelled to pay a specified sum on a weekly or monthly basis under the scheme.

The components of THRIVELY as shown in Figure 1 includes:

  1. Payment Gateway
  2. Digital Multicurrency Wallet
  • Investment
  1. Loan Facility
  2. Financial Intelligence
  3. Networking
  • Events
  • Back-end Admin

UniXP is a student-friendly application aimed at making campus life interesting and easy. It also serves as a medium of receiving first hand authentic information from university sources, enhancing student interactions using chat rooms, organize schedules for easy time-management for students, easy navigation on-campus for fresh students and to connect students with tutors easily.

UniXP is a product of extensive research and planning. The founders of UniXP being students themselves, have first-hand experience of various problems on campus which include improper dissemination of information, difficulty navigating and identifying certain building landmarks within the school environment as fresh students, difficulty keeping track of your schedule and finding suitable tutors. They therefore came up with several ideas to identify and deal with majority of the issues that several other students have also faced and are currently facing, with UniXP being the solution.

The expansion of UniXP is not a problem, given the total market size which includes the number of higher institutions all around the world is $1,418,400,000, and the target market which includes the number of higher institutions in Nigeria is $133,506,792. Although the expansion of UniXP will not be limited to the different locations and schools in Nigeria. After a solid foundation has been made in FUTA (UniXP beta testing ground), the plan is to expand to other schools in africa that are also within our reach.

UniXP objectivizes partnership with School Governments and Student Unions to help bridge the gap between the school management and Student Union Government (SUG) in disseminating information to the students about both academic and extra-curricular activities. Also, as UniXP fosters partnership with student businesses, this solution would evidently facilitate the creation of the largest student community in the world. UniXP would therefore also assist in students’ business advertisement of goods and services.

In conclusion; the goal of UniXP is to enhance student interaction with their local environment, thereby creating a thriving socioeconomic campus community.
